Hugo Chavez Opens Miltary Base for Shakira Concert

Hugo Chavez has opened his arms (and military base) to Shakira, so that she could perform a concert in Venezuela. It is the same military air base that was at the center of a failed 2002 coup.

Shakira had been unable to find a venue in the country, Chavez said in a speech, so he decided to open La Carlota base in Caracas on Saturday after receiving a letter from her promoters.

La Carlota had been reserved for military use since the attempted coup, in which Chavez was temporarily forced out of power.

The president joked that he wanted to attend the concert, the BBC said.

Chavez said the other day he'd put on a wig and not even his bodyguards had been able to recognize him. "Maybe I'll put on a wig and go see Shakira," he said. No word on if he did.
